GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter)

A safety device that de-energizes a circuit within an established period of time when a current to ground exceeds a specified level. Triggered by an imbalance between the supply and return currents. Similar in function to an earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB), a residual current device (RCD), or a core balance relay (CBR).
